Gray slug (Deroceras agreste)

Characteristics of the Limax Species:
- Elongated, smooth body: Its body is gelatinous and covered in a thick mucus, helping it move on dry surfaces.
- Color: The body can vary from whitish or yellowish to gray or brown, with a darker area on its back.
- Lack of a shell: Unlike most snails, the limax slug does not have a shell, or it has a very small and underdeveloped one, making it appear as a larger.
Behavior and Diet:
- Limax is nocturnal, meaning it is active at night and hides under rocks, leaves, or in damp soil during the day.
- It feeds on a wide range of plants, including vegetables, fruits, flowers, and even ornamental plants, causing significant damage in gardens and agricultural crops.
- The slug feeds by scraping plant material with its radula (a mouth organ), creating irregular holes in leaves and stems.
Damage Caused:
- Agriculture: Limax can destroy vegetable crops, particularly those with tender leaves, such as lettuce, cabbage, peppers, and tomatoes. The damage is often noticeable through small, irregular holes in the leaves.
- Gardens and ornamental plants: This slug also feeds on flowers and garden plants, affecting both their aesthetics and health.
- Rapid infestation: Limax reproduces quickly, and under favorable conditions (high humidity and moderate temperatures), it can cause significant damage in a short period of time.
Control Methods:
- Physical control: Handpicking the slugs during the night when they are active can be effective, though labor-intensive.
- Traps: There are slug traps, such as those using beer or ammonia, which attract limax.
- Barriers: Placing barriers made of salt or wood ash can discourage slugs from moving toward affected plants.
- Chemical products: Solutions or pellets containing metaldehyde or attractant pheromones can reduce slug populations, but these should be used with caution due to their potential impact on other organisms.
- Repellent plants: Some plants, such as garlic, mint, or lavender, can help repel slugs.
Limax is a challenging pest to control, especially in climates that favor its growth, but with a combination of prevention methods and targeted treatments, damage can be minimized.
